The Clothes Pin Race Cars were made as follows.

Materials Needed.

1 clothes pin
2 one inch pieces of straw size tubing per car( similar to fish tank air hose;it needs to be non flexible )
4 medium size gum balls
2 tooth picks
Elmer's Glue
Colored Markers ( if desired )

We started by having the clothes pins ready to go before the meeting by taking a piece of 1 inch tubing and gluing it to the bottom of the clothes pin -( on the side that is away from the mouth.) then let it the glue dry overnight.

When you are ready to make them at your meeting, just have the boys and an adult help them by; first putting a piece of 1 inch tubing in the mouth of the clothes pin.( just by pinching it open and closing it down inside the clothes pin ).
Then have the boys pick out their 4 gum balls ( for tires ) and have them poke a hole in each gum ball about half way through with a tooth pick. Next place a small amount of glue in a dish . Dip one end of the tooth pick in the glue and push it back though the hole you created in a gum ball. After you have one gum ball on the tooth pick place it through the tubing and glue the other gumball on. repeat this for both front and back tires ( gum balls ); Be careful though not to get any glue inside the tubing. Next you can have the boys paint them with Colored Markers while the glue dries the gumball tires on .Now they are ready to race.
